By Georgia O’Connor-Harding MORE THAN $100,000 has been raised at a fundraising evening to help West Melton teenager Maddie Collins. The event at the Addington Raceway last week drew a crowd of more than 300 people in support of Maddie, who is in urgent need of a kidney transplant. She is waiting to hear if she can get a transplant at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, United States, which is expected to cost $750,000. The $100k adds to the $170,000 already raised for Maddie through Givealittle pages and community events, bringing the total now raised to more than $270,000. Maddie is in Auckland’s Starship Hospital with her mother, Sarah Manson Collins, this week having more tests and getting advice about Maddie’s medication and dialysis treatment. Mrs Manson Collins said the fundraising event was amazing. •Turn to page 5

Maddie Collins, the West Melton 13-year-old, has on her plate a mission to survive. That’s right: Survive. She is relying on the public for expensive treatment for a kidney condition. One hundred thousand dollars was raised last week but there’s much more to go. Also, on the front page is swimmer Hannah Bates, a Lincoln 17-year-old who has just returned from the Bahamas with a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games. Her aspiration is to get to an Olympics. To do this she will need financial help to compete internationally, the only way that she will consistently improve over the next few years to reach her goals. Kayak park plan for The Willows By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A KAYAKING facility could be constructed to complement The Willows Park development near the Waimakariri River. Environment Canterbury is running a series of workshops to discuss how they could develop The Willows at the end of Thompsons Rd. Kayaker Bruce Leslie has pitched an idea to construct a new white water course and swimming hole downstream from the irrigation canal on Intake Rd near Kirwee. Tom The kayaking Lambie facility and swimming hole aims to discourage people from swimming near the irrigation canal. But ECan parks and forest team leader David Owen said while these ideas could be considered in the future, it was not part of The Willows planning. There was no consultation document available for The Willows development. However, the kayaking facility and swimming hole were discussed at a Christchurch West Melton Water Management Zone Committee meeting last

week, but no formal resolution was made. Committee member and ECan councillor Tom Lambie said while the committee was willing to explore the option, a lot of work would need to be done to see if the project was feasible. Although Mr Leslie was yet to find the funding for the project, he would like to see it completed by the end of the year.

He said there has been one death in the irrigation canal and the aim of his project is to move people away from the dangerous structure. In 2012, Ashleigh Kumar died while swimming in the irrigation pond when she was dragged facedown beneath a narrow underwater gateway leading from the storage pond to the river. Every warning sign at the

canal had been vandalised the day Miss Kumar and her friends visited, but they have since been replaced. In spite of Miss Kumar’s death, Mr Leslie said people are still swimming in the area. He said there was potential for Environment Canterbury and the district council to put more fencing around the canal structure. Car parking, picnic areas, toilets and native plantings are included in the plan for the kayaking facility and swimming hole. Another reason for the plan was so kayakers did not have to travel as far to train. Mr Leslie said kayakers have a long way to travel with the Hurunui River being the closest training venue. The idea has been supported by the kayaking community. Kirwee kayaker Ross McLeod said it would be an excellent spot for the facility. “There are not many swimming holes for teenagers to go really,” he said. •HAVE YOUR SAY: Would you use the new kayaking facility at Thompsons Rd? In Brief SHEFFIELD FENCE Sheffield will get a chain fence beside the railway line to stop motorists backing into a ditch. The Sheffield/Waddington Community Committee approved fencing the area last week. The district council’s disposals and leasing manager Rob Allen said a contractor has been instructed to install the fence. However, this requires final approval from KiwiRail. CENTRE OPENING A celebration for the opening of the Dunsandel Community Centre will be held on Friday. The new facility replaces the original Dunsandel Community Hall after it was damaged beyond repair in the 2010/2011 earthquakes. The opening will be attended by Mayor Sam Broughton, MP for Selwyn Amy Adams and Dunsandel Community Committee chairman Russell Dalzell. PLAYCENTRE TO MOVE The Hororata Playcentre is planning to move behind the Hororata Fire Station on Bealey Rd. District council property and commercial manager Douglas Marshall is completing a time frame to make sure the land is safe and uncontaminated.

Emotional medal for up-and-coming Lincoln resident Hannah Bates returned home from the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas last week. The 17-year-old swimmer competed in five different events and won a bronze medal in the 100m butterfly. She talks to Gordon Findlater Congratulations on winning bronze in the Bahamas. What was it like on the podium receiving your medal? I was crying. When I shook the man’s hand I held in the emotion, and then when I received the medal I started crying. When we turned and watched the flags rise it was just amazing. I’m not sure how to describe it, it was like nothing I’ve ever felt before. What was it like in the pool when you realised you’d finished third? I turned for the 50m mark and I could hear everybody yelling and screaming, so I realised something must be good. I touched fourth and pinned the other girl back in the final 50m.

We sat next to them at the pool and we traded a lot of our uniform with them. Did you get much down time in the Bahamas? After the game we went snorkelling with turtles and the coral fish. I was kind of like the film Finding Nemo, there were so many different bright coloured fish. It was amazing, the water was so clear and blue. We were lucky enough to touch the turtles and were swimming along them as they were doing their thing. It was pretty incredible and something I had on my bucket list. The New Zealand team had a big welcome home party at Auckland Airport. What was it like being part of that? swimming star How did you get into swimming and how long have you been doing it now? I first started swimming when I was six months old. Mum and I did the mother/baby lessons and I first started competitive swimming when I was 10-years-old. Where you always successful from day one? No. It’s been a big learning process, I started off at the bottom of the rankings when I was younger and I’ve just slowly started working my way up. Hopefully I can keep progressing forward. Was there a point when you realised swimming was something you wanted to take quite seriously? In 2012 I was also doing rhythmic gymnastics and I went to nationals and won gold for my age group. I also went to the national junior champs that year and won gold there as well. After that I realised I just wanted to do swimming and make that my career. What keeps you busy outside of swimming? It’s just swimming really. I wake up in the morning, go to training, go to school, come home, go to training and then it’s nearly bed time by the time I’m

home at night. How does that work for having a social life? My friends are amazing. They’re really understanding, they know I can’t be out late at night because I’ve got to go to training the next day. It is hard, especially with getting older now and a lot of people are wanting to

I’ve made so many new friends from going there and I know that swimming is going to make me plenty of good friends in the future. What are the plans going forward? I will be going to the Commonwealth Games trials in December. Next year is Junior Pan Pacific Championships which are in Fiji and Oceania Championships in Papua New Guinea. Beyond that I’m looking at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but that may not happen because I’ll only be 20 by then. You train at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, has that made life easier being closer to Lincoln? Yes. I used to commute to Jelly Park every day and then when the Selwyn Aquatic Centre opened it was a no-brainer to go there. It’s only a 10min drive to the pool now rather than what would normally be a 20min drive into town, plus traffic.

The debate was over why Mr Shadbolt should or shouldn’t be prime minister. Maddie was presented on the night with a $10,000 cheque from The Lamar Charitable Trust. Two pillowcases sewn by Maddie as a fundraiser, which she usually sells for $20, were auctioned for $2000 on the night. The pillowcases also caught the attention of the management team at the new Novotel Christchurch Airport, which is

set to open early next year, and they offered to buy 200 of them. Hotel general manager Olivier Lacoua said he planned to give the pillowcases as a gift to the hotel’s corporate clients, along with a card explaining Maddie’s story and linking to her fundraising pages. He said his team was impressed Maddie was not just asking for money, but had created something unique to sell. “The main thing is supporting a local girl. We are more than happy to assist as part of the community, all working together to hopefully help her to get treatment,” he said. Mrs Manson-Collins said she was confident enough money would be raised to get Maddie the treatment. Setback in bid to make New York marathon By Georgia O’ConnorHarding NOTHING HAS ever stopped paraplegic Ian Walker from taking on enduring marathons – in spite of having his fair share of knock-backs. He can be seen training on his hand-bike every second day in Ellesmere. However, he was denied entry in the Christchurch Marathon for seven years due to safety concerns. After being the first person to hand-bike the Buller Gorge Marathon this year, the Doyleston resident was finally given entry into June’s Christchurch event. Now he is gearing up for his biggest race yet – the New York City Marathon. Through disability support organisation Achilles International, Mr Walker has been selected to take part in the event in November. But he has had another setback, having the sponsorship for his trip to the Big Apple cut. The company Mr Walker did not wish to name, was

going to cover most of the costs for the trip. “These things happen, there is not much they can do . . . I have just got try raise that money somewhere else,” he said. As well as fundraising Mr Walker plans to raise awareness of serious brain injuries, co-occurring with spinal cord injuries, on social media through the three long-distance rides he is taking part in. Mr Walker became a paraplegic in 2006 after he crashed into the back of a truck between Napier and Hastings. Before then, he was a nationally ranked soccer referee. Ellesmere wins butchery of the decade By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE OWNERS of the Ellesmere Butchery sure know their meat. The butchery took the title of New Zealand Pork producer of the decade at the New Zealand Pork, Bacon and Ham Competition last week. The butchery won five out of seven of the national competition’s bacon and ham awards. The competition had more than 200 entries. The butchery took out silver for its boneless ham, bone-in ham, dry cured middle bacon and shoulder bacon, and bronze for its middle eye bacon. Owner Chris Brown said it was the first time the butchery had received a medal in the bacon category. In previous years, the butchery has won an array of awards including supreme, gold, silver and bronze. “Every bacon and ham product we produce is an award-winning product and we have awards in every bacon and ham category,” Mr Brown said. Mr Brown, who has been a butcher for more than 30 years, and his wife Sue took over the butchery in 2006. Before then, Mr Brown

when it first came up for sale. The family took a risk by buying the butchery, and Mr and Mrs Brown moved with their children into the Leeston area. At the end of 2015, the shop was put on the market, but the Browns could not find the right people to take over the business. “I don’t want the skills I have built up to go to waste. Rolleston residents being driven potty By Andrew King ROLLESTON residents are being driven potty by a large hole in the road and now have taken matters into their own hands. The hole, which was made worse by the recent rain, is on the side of Masefield Drive and has grown so large that vehicles have their tyres popped and rims wrecked. Resident Kirsty Lee lives across the road from the hole and was sick of hearing motorists being caught out by it, so she put a road cone beside it to warn of the danger. In a Facebook post on a Rolleston community page she said: “Sorry Naylor Love, but we borrowed your cone and placed it here to save tyres.” More than 200 people have reacted to the Facebook post including commenting on their own experiences. New shopping centre planned for Lincoln Work is underway on a new shopping centre for Lincoln, with ground works currently being carried out at the site on the corner of Edward Street and Eastfield Drive. There will be seven shops and a restaurant in the new Rosemerryn shopping centre. Developed by the Merryn Group, the idea behind the complex was sparked by Lincoln locals who expressed a need for more hospitality and retail outlets in the town, to complement existing providers. Covering one hectare of land and fronting onto one of the main routes into Lincoln, this high profile corner site will no doubt be attractive to a wide range of commercial and retail operators. Reserve status changing Rolleston Reserve Management Committee chairman Jens Christensen writes about the district council declining its request to manage Foster Park The Rolleston Reserve Management Committee has been delegated the management and maintenance of Rolleston Reserve, Brookside Park and the Foster Dog Park by the district council. Very unfortunately, the district council declined to allow the committee the right to manage Foster Park and this duty has fallen to council managers and subcontracted maintenance works. This is in total opposition to the strong request from the management committee to manage Foster Park and in essence the ratepaying people of Rolleston (who have funded the development and ongoing maintenance) have no voice in its operation or running. The committee is made up of public representatives and all of

the sports codes and user groups using the three reserves that it manages. The committee also manages its full-time and part-time caretaking staff who are responsible for grounds bookings, cleaning on a daily basis three public toilets (365 days per year), turf care, weed spraying, tree trimming, vandalism and rubbish collection and disposal. We always welcome members of the public to sit on our committee and assist with the governance of the reserves. The list of users is almost endless but includes rugby (482

players), dog club (120 members), scouts (141 members plus 20 leaders), playcentre, athletics (210 members), netball (340 members), tennis, cricket, softball, baseball, rugby league, summer touch rugby. Also the grounds regularly host cancer relay for life, school athletic sports, teddy bear picnics, circus, and the Selwyn Sports Trust combined primary schools eight week winter sports. Rolleston Reserve houses the youth park and along with Brookside Park a junior playground. Rolleston Reserve’s status is changing to make way for the new Town Centre Master Plan (all of the fields fronting Tennyson St will disappear), and as such we are unable to plan for the extension of the youth park at this time. The youth park is an important place for youth to hang out with their peers and away from their parents and siblings. While there is a destination playground and youth park being built at Foster Park, the youth facility in Rolleston Reserve will continue to be of tremendous importance as it will always be in the centre of the commercial area and close to the shops.

News Cashing in on the comedy show By Georgia O’Connor-Harding COMMUNITY groups are laughing all of the way to the bank thanks to the Live in Lincoln Comedy Night. Some of New Zealand’s top comedians will be travelling to the township to take the stage for an evening of comedy at the Lincoln Event Centre. Comedians Ben Hurley, Paul Ego, Michele A’Court, Jeremy Elwood and Gish will star in the show. The organisers behind the show are giving a selection of Selwyn high schools, primary schools and community groups the opportunity to fundraise for their organisations. Organiser and Lincoln resident David Parlane said for every ticket sold by the community group, organisers are donating $5 back to it. “If someone sells 100 tickets, they make $500 . . . it is just another way to give back to the community,” he said. Mr Parlane said tickets for the comedy show are “ripping out the door” at the moment. Bid to get Glentunnel cycleway By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A PETITION signed by 30 residents has been put forward in a bid to have a cycleway constructed in the Glentunnel area. A loop cycleway starting and finishing in Glentunnel and covering Glenroy, Hororata and Coalgate was presented to the Malvern Community Board last week. It was presented by board member Karen Meares. Board chairwoman Jenny Gallagher said while she can see a lot of benefits for the cycleway, there is a lot of work yet to go into the planning of the project. Darfield resident Ross Fowler, who cycles in the area, said it would make the roads safer for cyclists. “Traffic and tourists are not so good on overtaking cyclists . . . there hasn’t really been an accident but I am sure there will be one day,” he said. His wife, Maria agreed and said a lot of people are scared of traffic. She said it was a great idea for encouraging people to get out on their cycles.

Their 3-2 win over Halswell United at the weekend means with four rounds remaining, Selwyn are 10 points clear of second place Christchurch. “This has been the goal since the start of the season. There’s been a few sleepless nights as we’ve got closer to realising that,” said Selwyn coach Lee Padmore. SATURDAY’S Ellesmere rugby final between Darfield and Southbridge will be a special occasion for the McIlroy brothers Blair and Scott. Blair has played club rugby at Darfield since a junior and will play his 200th first grade match for the club in Saturday’s final. His brother Scott brought up his 200th game last month for the club. “Blair’s played for Darfield his entire life other than a couple of years in England,” said Darfield co-coach Alex Robertson. “Lifting the Coleman Shield would be a pretty awesome way to bring up 200 I reckon.” Defending Coleman Shield champions Southbridge kept their hopes of finishing the

season with four trophies in the cabinet alive with a 33-7 win over Prebbleton at the weekend, while Darfield will hope to win their first ever Coleman Shield after accounting for Waihora 24-13 on Saturday. Darfield and Southbridge met earlier in the year in roundrobin play. Southbridge took the honours 21-10 on that occasion. “It will be business as usual this week. We want to come into the game physically and mentally fresh. It’s always going to be tough against Southbridge and they’re probably the favourites coming into the game,” said Robertson. Darfield got off to a slow start in their semi-final against Waihora and quickly found themselves down 6-0.

Lincoln grind out win LINCOLN Combined have battled back from a bad run of form to take out a hard fought 21-17 win over Rangiora High School in the UC Championship. Second-five Wil Gualter came up with the goods when it mattered for Lincoln, scoring a 90m intercept try to all but win the game. Rangiora were first to score before Lincoln answered back through tries to winger Beau Luxton and fullback Kyle Jamieson, which were both converted by Brett Gillan.

In the second half, Rangiora opted to go for a try after being awarded a penalty. The decision resulted in Gualter’s run-away try. Rangiora scored a third try late in the game to make the final score 21-17. Lincoln will host two of the competitions powerhouses in their final two round-robin games. They will welcome Marlborough Boys’ College on Saturday before facing Christchurch Boys’ High School next weekend.

On the roads this week The intersection of Hoskyns Road and Sandy Knolls Road is being upgraded and a change of priority will occur this month so that traffic approaching from Sandy Knolls Road will need to stop. Traffic delays may occur and detours may operate while the upgrade occurs.

The big blue mobile library will soon be rolling into Faringdon.

From Thursday 3 August the Mobile Library will be stopping at Faringdon to support this new community and ensure that library services continue to be highly accessible. The inaugural stop will take place outside the South Point Retail Centre between 11.40am and 12.10pm. A free HotPick or DVD will be on offer for residents who come to look at the mobile library, join the mobile library, and regular customers who come to issue and return books.

Construction of a right turn bay is continuing at the intersection of Dynes Road and Springston Rolleston Road, with traffic controls in place at this location. Care is needed when driving through the site. Cattlestop cleaning and ford reinstatement is occurring on Algidus Road. Flooding repairs will be occurring at various areas across the district. Slip removal and repair work is continuing on Malvern Hills Road. Sewer line installation work is continuing on Shands Road and Selwyn Road – traffic delays may occur due to this work.

Christchurch Southern Motorway Extension–NZTA From Monday 31 July the CSM2 project team continue to fell trees along the north-bound side of Main South Road between Robinsons Road and Waterholes Road. This will be carried out using Stop/Go setups between 9am–4pm and will create queues. We recommend allowing more time for your journey or using alternative side roads.

Dog bylaw – we want your opinion We’re looking to offer more spaces for you to take your furry friend to run around – and we’re looking for your feedback. The Council is now undertaking public consultation on changes to its Dog Bylaw, which include the addition of several new areas where off-leash exercise is permitted, and additions to the list of schools and other locations where dogs are prohibited. Proposed new off-leash exercise areas include Foster Park (Rolleston), Leeston Dog Exercise Area, McHughs Forest Park, Preston Avenue Reserve (West Melton), Coalgate Recreation Reserve, Dryden Reserve (Rolleston), Edendale Reserve, Waihora Domain (Motukarara), and Westview Park (Darfield). Schools added to the list of areas prohibited to dogs include Rolleston College, West Rolleston School, and Lemonwood Grove School, along with the Darfield and Prebbleton skate parks. Report a pothole Potholes breed like rabbits in the rain! After the recent flooding across the district you may have noticed an increased number of potholes appearing on Selwyn roads. Council staff are working to fix these but with around 2,500 kilometres of roads in Selwyn it’s hard for staff to stay on top of every stretch of road. You can help us by reporting a pothole to our team so that we are aware of it and can then take steps to repair it. There are a number of ways you can do this. If you have a smartphone you can download a free app called Snap, Send, Solve. This app is very simple to use, it asks you to take a photo of the pothole or other issue, it then identifies the location using the phone's GPS data and sends an email to the Council from your email address, including the incident type, notes, address of incident, photo, and contact details. The report is then allocated to the relevant Council department who will take the appropriate action. You can also report a pothole by filling out a Helpline form on our website at www.selwyn.govt.nz/contact-us/ helpline. This form asks you for details about your issue and your contact details so that Council can let you know when the issue is resolved. Tim WraighT and Ché VinCenT - Changing STorieS Both Tim Wraight and Ché Vincent live in the Motueka region in the top of the South Island, an area of diverse landscapes and environments from which to draw inspiration for their work. Tim’s carved wooden work for ‘Changing Stories’ exhibition explores the traditions associated with the reverence given to relics and remains, using the cultural practices of making intricate containers that different cultures fashion to hold these precious objects, Maori wakahuia (treasure boxes) and wakatupapaku (bone boxes) and European reliquaries which held the bones of saints, are the starting point for these pieces. Found remains of creatures and objects from the natural environment in his home area. Tim has constructed stories around fictional and whimsical; taking an object and giving it a new narrative and honouring its previous existence. Ché’s work for this exhibition is formed by his passion for botany and natural processes; exploring the patterns created by plant forms by the way water changes and repeats a flow pattern by decay and renewal. He uses recycled ‘Edges’ by Ché Vincent from the copper panels through a process of serendipitous exhibition ‘Changing Stories’ at experimentation. Ché has developed a fluid and Little River Gallery from August 5th intuitive approach and has developed methods of melting, beating, bending, and fusing copper into organic forms. Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us VESPULA WASPS are probably one of the most hated species around the house, on a picnic, or walking through a beech forest. There are two species of Vespula wasps in New Zealand, the German wasp (Vespula germanica) and the common wasp (Vespula vulgaris), which arrived in New Zealand in 1945 and 1978 respectively. At this time of the year it’s not uncommon to discover a Vespula queen wasp overwintering in the wood heap in a hibernating state. Their striped black and yellow appearance is unmistakable and is a warning that can be backed up

nests is 60 per hectare, which equates to 30 nests on a rugby field. The biomass of wasps in a beech forest (3.8kg/ha) is more than all the native birds. Beech forests support large densities of these exotic wasps because the trees are host to a native scale insect that produces large amounts of sugary honeydew that the wasps harvest to the detriment of our native birds and insects. Driven Hilux dressed up for visual appeal By Ross Kiddie IT’S BECOME a matter of course, if you sell the traditional double-cab utility in the New Zealand market, at some point there will be a limited production run of dress-up models. The light commercial market is New Zealand’s most buoyant and those who do sell utes also have a large range of accessories and after-market kits which you can use to personalise your vehicle. Toyota have had a succession of upmarket Hilux utes over the years, the latest to come my way was a full Toyota Racing Development, four-wheel-drive, double cab, and being less muscular that some of its competitors, it is a tasteful example of what can be done to make a ute look sporty. I’m quite familiar with TRD product, a few years ago I purchased a suspension set for my Toyota and I can report the gear is high quality and well engineered. The fender flares, honeycomb grille, nudge bar and big wheels fitted to the base SR5 Hilux look like they are an integral part of the vehicle. The package also consists of a motorised deck cover which, according to Toyota, is a New Zealand first. Of course, there’s no gear to make the ute any quicker or

enhancements, the Hilux in this form is still the formidable offroad machine it has gained such a high reputation for, its 286mm of ground clearance figure is right up there with its competitors. The TRD Hilux has fabulous suspension given its load bearing characteristics. It’s very traditional underneath with a leafspring located live rear axle and independent double wishbones up front. That mechanical aspect is matched by the interior detailing. The Hilux is very car-like inside, the trim material and fittings are first class. On the road, the TRD Hilux feels sprightly and eager, that taking into account I only drove the vehicle without load. The manual shift works freely and clutch action is light and progressive. In rear-wheel-drive drive mode it steers keenly into a corner and

handle differently, the inclusions are cosmetic value only, but it certainly looks the part and gives the new-generation Hilux added flair. The TRD products are not just confined to the exterior, on the inside there are TRD-branded floor mats. Those items sit on top of a well-specified machine in the first instance, the TRD-spec vehicle sits at $59,990 or $62,490 for the automatic version. Powering the TRD Hilux is the new 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel engine that Toyota rolled out for the new series at the beginning of last year. It is a fuel-friendly unit for which Toyota claim a 7.6-litre per 100km (37mpg) combined cycle rating.

It is also listed with power figures of 130kW and 450Nm, the latter available all of the way from 1600rpm to 2400rpm. It has strong turbo boost and works freely through the transmission. Coupled to a six-speed manual, there are short gaps between gears which allows the engine to work freely through the torque spread. There’s also a push-button power mode which enhances throttle response. The Hilux’s four-wheel-drive system is operated by an in-cabin dial device, the low ratio transfer selection means immediate crawl speed. I only used it for a short forestry track burst near Hororata, but I can report that the TRD ute isn’t burdened by its

there is relatively strong feedback through the steering. The TRD model rides on huge Maxxis rubber (265/60 x 18in) and they are quiet tyres which also help provide solid feel through the steering. There’s always a point where you think oversteer would develop if you accelerate keenly through a corner, but there is a five-star safety system in place and the electronic traction and stability control devices alleviate that. At 100km/h, the engine is turning over at a lazy 1500rpm, providing quiet motion and impressive fuel usage, at that speed it is sipping diesel instantaneously at the rate of just 7l/100km (40mpg), which to my way of thinking is good for a vehicle which weighs in at over two-tonne. I have an acquaintance who recently bought a double cab ute, and the decision of what brand to buy was based solely on what he received in terms of extra items made available on the vehicle. That suggests to me that many other buyers look at a purchase the same way. If the TRD model is no longer on Toyota’s books, there are plenty of other options and kits that will dress up Hilux. Check out the Gladiator, it’s about as bold as a ute can get.

A “home away from home” is how the staff members at the West Melton Kindergarten, Nursery & Learning Centre describe their attractive, purposebuilt centre. Catering for children aged up to six years, the centre offers four separate sections – the Nursery, the Kindergarten for two and three year-olds, the Learning Centre for four year-olds and the Before and After School Programme. All the permanent teachers are qualified, registered ECE teachers, and the centre offers a balance between structure, routine and children’s choice. Rurally located, it provides extensive

Economic impact of weeds far greater than estimated The true cost of weeds to New Zealand’s agricultural economy is likely to be far higher than previous research would suggest, according to a new study funded by AgResearch. AgResearch and Scion scientists worked with economists from Lincoln University’s Agribusiness and Economics Research Unit to review the available published research on the costs of weeds to New Zealand’s productive land (for the pastoral, arable and forestry sectors). That review reached a conservative overall estimate of $1.658 billion a year (based on 2014 costs). “The research on weed costs done previously used differing approaches, and the numbers were sometimes outdated or contained guesswork,” says AgResearch principal scientist Dr Graeme Bourdôt. “In addition, the estimate of $1.658b only covers the few weed species – 10 of the 187 pasture weeds, some arable land weeds and forestry weeds – that have been the subject of research into their impacts. The focus has largely been on the loss of production. The substantial costs of weed control, such as the use of herbicides, was not always considered,” Dr Bourdôt says. “Given all of these limitations, the true cost

Gardening Ripe raspberries reign supreme By Rachel Vogan ONCE THE berry season starts in summer, I check my crops for ripening berries with a hawklike intensity. Many berries never make it out of the garden; I find I become quite selfish and would rather sit scoffing handfuls of the newly-ripened gems in the garden than take them inside to share. While I love strawberries, loganberries, and boysenberries, to me raspberries will always reign supreme. Many people who visit and wander my garden have no idea that I grow raspberries, in most part because they are grown under a tight tent of netting. This contraption which, admittedly, looks rather like a prison, is an ugly but highly effective deterrent to both birds and my pet dog, Stella, preventing them from harvesting my berry bounty before I can. The best advice I can give anyone who wants to enjoy a heavy harvest of raspberries is to invest in some sort of cropcover to ensure you, rather than the local wildlife, get first pick at your crop.

TYPES OF RASPBERRIES Raspberries are classified as either summer – or autumnfruiting types. Both grow in exactly the same way, but fruit at separate times on different stem growth, meaning that with clever planting, you can be harvesting raspberries for around four months of the year. The summer types produce fruit on stems that have been dormant throughout winter, on what we call last season’s

growth. Because of this, it’s important to know what sort of raspberries you are planting, as it can be easy to prune off the flowering or fruiting wood if you don’t know when your plants fruit. The autumn-fruiting varieties produce their fruit on stems that appear in the current season’s stems or wood, meaning the new stems that shoot up in spring will mature into branches that will support the autumn fruit.

Pest control As the plant begins to fruit, you will want to put some form of protection over the plants to stop the birds getting the berries. Use a mesh or wire cover so they still get air, water and sunlight.

Strawberries are a kiwi favourite and now is the time to get them into the garden. Garden beds, raised planters, pots, hanging baskets and other containers are all great places for these wee gems to grow. If you don’t have an area at home to grow them in the ground, head down to your local garden supplies shop and grab a pot or hanging basket. Make sure you get top quality mix to plant into – it will make a big difference to the amount and quality of the fruit you get from your plant. You don’t need a mix that specifically says “Strawberry Mix” on it, our Patio Plus will give you excellent results, as will our Tomato Mix, because these two fruits have very similar nutritional requirements. You can also use the strawberry fertiliser (and vice versa) if you have one and not the other. If you are planting into the ground, mix through some Organic Compost with the soil that is there, if you are doing a raised bed, you can use either Vege Garden Mix, or Premium Potting Mix.

Due to company growth a fulltime seed cleaning machinist / storeman position has become available in our Rakaia processing facility. Reporting to the site manager duties will include overseeing (in conjunction with the site manager) the production and operation of a modern seed cleaning plant, serving farmer clients, forklift operation and general store duties. Winter landscaping tasks for a new build Hard landscaping and ground preparation around a new home can be started now. Ground preparation – Prepare the ground by spreading and levelling out top soil, spraying two or three times to eradicate unwanted twitch couch grass and weeds. Ready lawn can be laid though seed is best sown in spring or autumn. Outdoor wiring – Outdoor wiring for exterior garden lighting, a water feature, spa pool or swimming pool may not have been on the radar when the house was built. Even if planned for the future, it is best to install the wiring for these, before laying lawn and planting out the garden. Water features – Incorporate a pond, fountain or waterfall for a relaxing spot in the garden. Their pumps can be electrically wired, battery operated or solar powered. Irrigation system – An irrigation system can be fitted at any stage. Having it in place before laying the lawn will make it easier to water, aiding its survival. Irrigation specialists are more available in winter so may offer a better price. Garden edging – Garden beds are more easily maintained if edged. Macrocarpa, retaining blocks, old bricks, stones, concrete curbing and recycled plastic board roll are often used, with seamless materials translating to less weeds growing in joints or cracks. Constructing fencing, decks and paved areas – While driveways and main paths are usually laid before house completion, other paving and decks may still need to be built so getting this work underway will provide areas for relaxing outdoors on warm days with a free run for planting and finalising landscaping come spring. Decking may be built using treated pine, bamboo, hardwood or a composite product with the cost and durability varying between each. Apply for a permit if the deck will be 1.5 metres or higher.

Seating and raised garden beds around the garden or deck can also be constructed though planting may be left until the spring nursery sales. Creating shaded areas – Screens, fencing and pergolas over outdoor courtyards and decks add interest and provide structure for additional shading like blinds. Alternatively, sun shades or awnings might be chosen and with manufacturers often quieter at this time of year, ordering now should guarantee delivery before summer. Planting deciduous trees – Deciduous trees and shrubs are dormant over winter so now is the perfect time to get these into the garden. Prepare the ground with compost and mulch so moisture is retained over summer. Glasshouses and sheds – A garden shed or glasshouse might be desirable. Kitset options are available at hardware stores or one might be built to suit your setting.

Hardwood is a popular choice for decking.

Now is the time to plant deciduous trees.

Taking care of hard landscaping and preparing the ground for a lawn will give you more time to get out and enjoy the warmer months ahead.

Home builders before the 1970s rarely thought about this. • Automatic pool covers and electric curtains are included in a lot of new homes, he says. • In a new subdivision you’re not going to have five cross-leased small homes next door to your architecturally designed fivebedroom dream home, he says.

• New purpose-built shopping and service centres cater for the modern life. • New schools can be popular. New schools are being designed with “Modern Learning Environments”, which are considered better layouts for 21st-century learning. Another important factor is it’s easier to get a mortgage. New Reserve Bank of New Zealand loan to value (LVR) ratio restrictions from October 1 don’t relate to new homes. Likewise the KiwiSaver HomeStart grant is doubled for first time buyers. When it comes to new apartment buildings they’re built to a higher standard of earthquake/fire proofing and, hopefully, are no longer leaky. There are, of course, disadvantages to buying new. Not everyone wants to wait six or 12 months to move into their home. Other downsides include: • Borrowing to cover the progress
